MacBook :: Unable To Use/application Unexpectedly Quit?

Kill a Frozen Program to Stop the Spinning Beachball in Mac OS X May 3, 2007 - 25 Comments Frozen apps happen to the best of us for reasons we don’t always understand, and a Mac application can just suddenly become unresponsive and we see the spinning beachball of death (sometimes called SBOD for short). Here's how to completely close the program with Windows' Task Manager or Mac OS X's Force Quit. Every computer user at some point will likely have to deal with a program that just stops responding.

Mar 24, 2009

Applications :: Mac Office 2008 And Powerpoint Versus Office Powerpoint Compatability?

For Mac Am I Always Supposed To Quit The Program In Python

May 8, 2009

I'm sure most people suffer from this but here goes.
So I make a presentation on Mac Office powerpoint, everything is fine. I open it up at university on the PC, all is fine. I maybe change some text on a slide and save it again. Open the same file again on my Mac, and it won't open some silly error comes up saying trouble accessing file from mac HD.
Then luckily I have keynote, so I just open it in that and use that.
Point is why does this happen?? Whilst keynote is better, sometimes I have to edit things on a PC at work or uni and then it becomes a giant mess on my mac.
Is there a quick fix, or will I have to throw Mac Office into my growing pile of Microsoft related garbage.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Safari Unable To Quit

Feb 2, 2012

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue.. I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.

Intel Mac :: Unable To Quit Applications?

May 9, 2012

I am having a situation where I will 'quit' an application and it closes but then it leaves a grey screen that I cannot interact with or make go away. When I scroll between the various screens there is a blank grey screen where the application that I just closed used to be. When I use my track pad to show me all of the screens that are open it shows the application that I was in (e.g., itunes) but shows it as a grey screen that cannot be closed unless I restart my computer.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Unable To Quit Safari?

Jun 6, 2012

Recently I have been unable to quit Safari, it starts running really slow and when I try to quit and restart nothing happens. The 'Quit' command under 'File' is greyed out and right clicking in the dock doesn't reveal 'Force Quit'; only 'Quit' shows but that doesn't work. The only solution is to re-boot the computer. This has happened a number of times recently.

IMac :: Unable To Force Quit - Item Disappeared From Desktop

Jan 27, 2010

I'm sure it's not a virus but I'd like to prevent this episode again.
-About 10 minutes ago I inserted my memory stick into my keyboard, and then connected to Cisco.
-I then tried to connect to my school's server and while the progress bar was loading I opened InDesign.
-The Indesign icon started doing it's little jumping thing but nothing was happening. I minimized my browser to look at the progress bar and it was still trying to connect to server. I waited about 2 minutes and when nothing happened I tried a force quit.
-It said that InDesign was not responding so I Force Quit it and nothing happened.
-I then tried to shut down the progress bar but I had that infuriating pinwheel going.
-I decided on a manual shutdown.
-I then turned the computer back on.
-Repeated the same steps except that this time Force Quit said my Safari AND Finder was not responding.
-I Force Quit Finder first. Then Force Quit Connecting to server but all of a sudden my desktop items disappeared as well as my toolbar at the top.
-I tried another manual shutdown because I couldn't call up my Force Quit with my shortcut keys and waited a minute.
-Turned my computer back on but the screen hadn't changed it was as if I had merely put my computer to sleep. I tried this twice.
-Then I turned it off again and this time unplugged my computer and waited a couple seconds.
-I am now on my third try and am afraid to connect to my school's server. I have only opened Safari to type this. I have an assignment due tomorrow!

You can remove many applications from Mac OS X simply bythrowing the application's icon in the Trash. However, sometimes you must do more than this to completely remove theapplication from your system. To completely remove an application, trythe following:

Use the installer program

If the application you are trying to remove has an installer program, see if that installer also has an uninstall or remove function. Insome cases, this option won't be immediately apparent, but many of thenewer installers do have this capability.

Remove with Launchpad

If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and purchased the applicationyou are trying to uninstall from the Mac App Store, you may be able touninstall with Launchpad. Start Launchpad, which you will find eitherin your Dock or in the Applications folder, and locatethe application you want to uninstall. Click and hold down your mouseor trackpad button over the application until its icon starts towiggle. If the application can be uninstalled from Launchpad, a smallX will appear in the upper left corner of its icon. Clickthe X and then click the Delete button to remove theapplication.

Frequently, applications native to Mac OS X are installed asself-contained packages. To throw them away, all you need to do isdrag the application icon into the Trash. Consult the application's documentation to determine if additional steps are needed to completely remove it.
